Minna Kangasmaa | Veera Komulainen
Puuul, Vienna, Austria
9.5.–1.6.2025
In the Liminal reflects the artists’ exploration of transitional spaces—those moments and places where transitions are palpable. The works in this exhibition engage with the idea of transformation, highlighting the thresholds between states of being, matter, and time. In the Liminal resonates with the annual theme Transitions – Reality or Fiction, addressing how shifting states of matter, perception, and experience influence our understanding of reality and fiction.
The exhibition features Minna Kangasmaa's site-specific work
Grey Area, which spreads into the exhibition space, is made of unfired clay. One of the peculiarities of Minna Kangasmaa’s artistic approach is that she allows her works to build, break down, and re-emerge in the same materials, but in new forms and contexts with each exhibition. In these liminal spaces, materials and forms are in constant flux. This approach reflects the transient nature of materials, matter and life, and invites us to consider how our interactions with materials—whether it be creation, destruction, or transformation—whether physical, temporal, or ideological—can mirror our own relationship with the world: constantly changing, unpredictable, and full of potential.
The strong connection of Minna Kangasmaa works to the earth describes something omnipresent, akin to a metaphysical primal force, which is inherent in living processes. It includes the proposition that the matter that surrounds us is not only passive, raw, or motionless, but rather vibrant, transforming, and actively influencing the non-static.
